Funchal is a ancient city in Madeira. It is said that the name Funchal comes from the abundance of fennel (funcho) that grows there. Funchal enjoys an excellent location that can easily be explored by foot.

One of the main attractions of Funchal, is the 'Se' Cathedral, built between 1493 and 1514 by Gil Eanes and featuring a Mudejar ceiling made of cedar wood and the Baroque carving of the golden Sacramento chapel to the right of the main altar. Also in Funchal, the Botanical Gardens are worth a visit, displaying plants from all over the world.
